Nifty things in Calgary
So back to Calgary again. While there I took many pictures of interesting things, so that's what this particular post will be about. There will be another post relating the goings-on of the meeting itself and another about Banff National Park.
On to the pictures!
First of all, Calgary is flat! I was expecting it to be nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, but well, it isn't. It really would be a great city to Rollerblade in ;)
The other thing is that there is art everywhere! The public shall enjoy art!!
This is a mural in the hotel we stayed it - I like how the plains are represented and how Calgary is just kind of in there with the mountains far in the background.
More public art:
Heh, this was cool and huge!! I only came up to the base of the tail. I love how it's made of old farm implements.
The Calgary Tower was very cool.
It's 525 feet up (well, it is taller if you consider the spire) and it has a Plexiglas floor in one spot so you can look STRAIGHT DOWN. Pretty cool, but really rather disconcerting - I didn't like it.
But here you can see Jay and Ellyn...
Every July, Calgary is home to the Calgary Stampede which brings tons of people into town. There is a slight cowboy theme running through the area and we encountered an example at a park...
While on a little sightseeing excursion, the Georgia Staters (Ellyn, Wes, Jay, Kevin and I) happened upon a Busk Stop.
We found this quite curious! I just found a very informative Wikipedia article about busking... Hunh. Of course, the US is on the tail end of that trend... Sigh. Anyways, they had guidelines for appropriate busking :) The area was actually quite nice with a little sunken stone amphitheater. Very cool.
On the street we walked along a bunch, there was a Hudson's Bay Company (established 2 May, 1670) - it's a department store now, kinda like Macy's. But they had some interesting things in the windows...
The gnomes!!! O.o Kinda cute yet kinda weird... (it says "Sonic Bloom" on the window)
Ugh, those pigs were ugly!! Seester, if you recall that one sitting pig that was in the toy box at Grandma and Grandpa's, you'll get a good picture of these...
Now for just a couple of odd and neat things that I saw.
First, the Canada games!
And the ad on the side of a bus
hahaha!
I hope you enjoyed my first little post of Calgary pictures. More to come!
